Romance of the THree Kingdoms, Journey to the West, and the Water Margin I’ve not read Dreams of the Red Chamber. As for quality, I would say the best written is Journey to the West (again excluding Dream of the REd Chamber), it has the strongest characters and the best writing. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is the most fun though, though it gets pretty stupid at time. Water Marigin is good but I think it is less well known for a reason. If you could only read one, go with Journey to the West, it has the most thematic value.

As the Chinese character for “seed,” zi, is the same as that for “son,” the pomegranate with its many seeds is symbolic of having multiple sons to continue a family’s lineage. The use of puns and rebuses to express wishes for longevity, good fortune, and even academic success is common in Chinese art.

The pseudonym of Zhang Yuan (张爰), Zhang Daqian was one of the most gifted forgers in the Chinese art world. After studying textile dyeing in Kyoto, Japan and traditional Chinese painting in Shanghai, Zhang began his art career by carefully emulating the styles of Individualist artists from the Ming and Qing dynasties, who rebelled against the orthodox forms with a more vivid and expressive strokes and subject matter. His copies of artists such as Shitao (石濤) have fooled even the greatest connoisseurs. Following the establishment of the Peoples’ Republic of China in 1949, Zhang left for South America, where he resided in various places such as Argentina, Brazil, and later on California and France as well, where he met with Pablo Picasso in 1956.
